What are the National Benchmark Tests?
The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are university entrance exams used by many South African universities alongside your Matric results. They assess your academic readiness for tertiary education and are made up of two tests:
-
AQL (Academic Literacy & Quantitative Literacy) – compulsory for all applicants.
-
MAT (Mathematics) – required for applicants to certain courses (like Engineering, Commerce, Health Sciences, etc.).
Many universities, including UCT, Wits, UP, and Stellenbosch, use these results when making admission decisions. While the content may seem familiar, the format and pressure are very different—so preparation is key.
